PRESENTATION OF THE
PAPPY VAN WINKLE’S 20 YEARS OF. FAMILY RESERVE LOT
THE VINTAGE
First released to the market in 1998, Pappy van Winkle 20 Year Old Family Reserve is one of the oldest and rarest expressions in the range. Named after Julian “Pappy” van Winkle, the first in the family to devote himself to the production of spirits, it is one of the most prestigious bourbons in the world. The 20 year old is also famous for having been the subject of a theft – sixty-five cases of three bottles each – from the distillery in 2013.
Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle was a salesman working for WL Weller and Sons. He created the Stitzel-Weller distillery by merging the A. Ph. Stitzel and Weller distilleries. His wheated bourbon recipe – where wheat replaces rye as the second grain – is very successful. It was his son Julian Van Winkle II who resurrected the Old Rip Van Winkle brand using stocks from the distillery, sold in 1972 then closed by United Distillers twenty years later. Julian Van Winkle III therefore turned to Buffalo Trace to continue production, first using the last barrels from Stitzel-Weller then switching to those from Buffalo Trace. By its recipe, its quality and its high age counts, Pappy Van Winkle is considered one of the best bourbons there is. The range includes bourbons aged from 10 years to 25 years and ryes aged 13 years or vintage.
